J.T. WATSON PARK

Simple expressive approach creates a welcoming park.

Simple geometric forms frame playgrounds while spaces invite rest and relaxation.

The redevelopment of this existing, deteriorated urban park located in one of Toronto’s ethnically diverse and family oriented communities, required the assessment of key issues including a lack of drainage / flooding and the deterioration of site amenities. The resulting design concept of maximizing the play potential of the space was based on input from the community and City staff. Two large, shaded, programmed play areas are balanced by a large, open lawn space. The planting strategy includes the use of new, low maintenance perimeter planting, which offers screening and year-round interest and colour. Added to this, existing trees were maintained and supplemented with new trees for additional shade.

Detailed and thorough drawing development and contract administration helped to ensure quality implementation. The result is a park that is playful, safe, and engaging for a diverse range of users.
